Roosevelt 2nd Ward History 2023
________________________________
Dear ward family and friends,
The Savior loves us and is our example of how to become better each day. As His followers, we seek His grace in helping our efforts to become our best selves and to change, improve and be more like Him. Just prior to the pandemic, the church introduced the Children and Youth program to help us as individuals and families to do just that:
"Heavenly Father wants you to learn and to grow. He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to be the perfect example for all of us in every way. The scriptures teach that in His youth, “Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man” (Luke 2:52).
Jesus Christ developed in all areas of His life—spiritually (favor with God), socially (favor with man), physically (stature), and intellectually (wisdom)—and so can you!
What are you already doing in these areas? Start thinking about what you want to improve or start doing."
As a ward council, we invite you - no matter your age or home circumstance - to join in this effort. In the quote above from the children and youth program, you'll notice that goals are divided into 4 areas. We invite you to focus on one of these 4 areas for three months at a time throughout the year in any way that makes sense for you. For the end of 2022, consider what you could focus on in the social aspect of your lives as individuals or families.
You may already be prayerfully working on these types of changes. We don't expect you to necessarily do anything different or additional to what you may already be doing.
If helpful, there are several attached documents, including a goal sheet to write things down as well as a pdf with ideas to get you thinking.
Thank you for your goodness, your service, your examples and your best efforts. None of us are perfect nor expected to be. But we can try to do better and be better each day. May God bless you in all that you do.

Elder and Sister Garner's Testimony from Newsletter 8-5-2023
We want people to see that I know Jesus Christ is the Creator
and Savior of our world, that the true Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints was restored after the great apostasy through the Prophet Joseph Smith.
He saw God the Father and Jesus Christ as two separate personages. Joseph Smith
translated the Book of Mormon, a true witness of the Savior’s divinity. The
Holy Ghost, the third member of the Godhead, can reveal its truthfulness as we
read and seek a witness. We have had prophets on the earth since Joseph Smith
and currently have President Russell M. Nelson, who hears God’s council for us
and guides our Church accordingly. Life with the Gospel is fulfilling and
wonderful. We know these things are true with all my heart and bear this
testimony, in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

OBITUARIES
Barbara Ann Evans
Barbara Evans, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away on November 27, 2023, at Utah Valley Hospital.
She was born December 11, 1944, to Charles and Delilah Mathews Larsen. She married Robert “Bob” M Evans in 1963 at the Salt Lake City Temple. Bob died August 22, 2008.
Barbara and Bob shared a connection that could withstand any storm. However, their love story doesn't end there. Barbara's love also extended to her children Angie and her late son Chuck.
Chuck was the joy of Barbara's life, and she cherished every moment she spent with him. She embraced his unique abilities, celebrated his accomplishments, and provided unwavering support throughout his life. The Mother/Daughter bond she shared with Angie was special. The four of them formed a close-knit family unit, supporting and uplifting one another through life's challenges. Creating a world filled with love, acceptance, and understanding.
Barbara's role as a grandmother brought her great joy. Her grandchildren and great- grandbabies were her world. Grandma Jewelry, as they lovingly called her, always had a twinkle in her eye when they were around. She loved creating lasting memories with them, whether it was baking cookies, or working on her garden.
In her free time, Barbara found solace in the pages of her favorite books. She was an avid reader, always eager to explore new worlds and gain knowledge. The Food Network was another source of inspiration for her, as she delighted in giving her daughter recipes for her to make.
She loved music and could often be found performing the songs of Elvis and Englbert Humperdink, regardless of her singing skills.
Barbara's faith was a cornerstone of her life. As an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she found strength and comfort in her beliefs.
Barbara Evans leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness. She will forever be remembered for the love she shared with her family and the impact she made on the lives of those around her.
Barbara is survived by her daughter, Angie (Rocky) Wills; grandchildren, Colton (Rachel) Wills, Chett Wills, Chellie (Shane) Lamb, and seven great-grandchildren, Stetson, KaizLee, Grace, & Vince Wills; Moxon Conetah; Kole & Tate Lamb; siblings, Garrold (Joyce) Larsen; Norman (Wanda) Larsen; RaNae (Gordon) DeLapp; numerous nieces and nephews, and her dog, Ruger.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; her son, Chuckie; and brothers, DeLoy & DeLoss Larsen.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, December 1, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the Cedarview Cemetery. There will be a viewing that morning at the Hullinger Mortuary 10:00-10:45am

Eloise Caldwell Adams
Eloise Caldwell Adams, age 88, of Roosevelt, passed away October 27, 2023 at the Beehive home in Vernal.
It is February 10, 2021, and I want to write my own obituary.
I was born February 24, 1935 in Maeser, Utah, in the south room of Grandpa Frank Edwin Colton’s old brick home. Dr. Franke was there helping my mom, Nancy Mar Colton Caldwell and my dad, Wallace Caldwell. I was their fifth and final child so I was always their baby. This home was on 2500 West just North of the Ashley Creek in Maeser. I guess we also lived with grandpa and aunt Jane (grandpa’s second wife) for several years because I can remember when I was four we moved into a little home about one-half mile south when daddy was taking care of uncle Hugh W. Colton’s ranch while he was serving in World War II.
Mom and dad bought their only home on 1500 North in Maeser (and it even had inside plumbing) when I was twelve. I had so many special memories of my growing-up-years–playing on the rocks in the creek, swimming in the canal and sliding on the ice in the wintertime. In the summertime I would walk up to Doc’s Beach at least once a week to roller skate, which was located North up towards Taylor Mountain, where the Vernal Rod and Gun Club is presently located.
I took piano lessons from three different teachers to learn how to play grandmother Elizabeth Jane Hacking Colton’s piano that mother and dad purchased for $50.00.
A lot of the time I would walk to the old Maeser chapel for our Maeser Ward church meetings. I was the accompanist for Primary by the time I was eleven and the pianist/organist for Sunday School, Sacrament Meeting and Mutual a year or so later. I would walk to the old Maeser School building, which held grades one through eight, for eight choice, memorable years for my elementary education and then graduated from Uintah High School in 1953.
Thoral Merkley and I were married October 8, 1953. He was in the Air Force and his mother, Lelia, and I drove all the way from Vernal to Nashville, Tennessee, where he was stationed at Symrna Air Force Base. While we lived in Nashville we had a baby boy, Stuart Lyman Merkley, born in 1956, who lived only eighteen hours While Thoral was serving in Korea, we divorced.
On March 31, 1959, I was privileged to marry my longtime friend and sweetheart, Keith Lincoln Adams, in the Salt Lake Temple. Keith died suddenly on November 16, 2020, while we were living in Washington, Utah. We loved the warmth; the friends in our senior branch, in our park where our little home was located and all of our “horseshoe-playing” friends. Keith had been playing golf and billiards just a couple of days before he died. We enjoyed 61 years of marriage, singing, working and playing together. We lived in Cary, Idaho; Craig Colorado; Vernal, Maeser, Duchesne, Roosevelt and Washington City, Utah.
I am thankful I have had the opportunity of serving in the many callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
We were blessed with three children: Rochelle (Sam) Hansen, Marshall Lane Adams, (deceased at age 19), and Ryan Keith Adams; our grandchildren: Rochelle’s only child, Stuart Bret (deceased at age 26); and Ryan’s daughter, Chandra Ann; and great-grandchildren: Donovon and Kasadi (James Cooper) and Macarius and KayLyn (Justin “Hoss” Minchey).
I’m so grateful for my heritage (grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins) and especially my kind, beloved parents, our children, our grandchildren, our great-grandchildren, my sisters and brothers, who are all now deceased, Betty (Lynn Mecham) Barta (Lonnie Thomas and Don Shaffer), Larry (Charlene and Ellen) and Lowell (Beverly), their children and their families, and for the many, many choice friends I have had throughout my earthly lifetime. I also love and appreciate my three surviving sisters-in-laws, Beverly Caldwell, Amber Adams Tebbs and Danna Dee Adams Smith.
The family and Eloise would like to thank all the people at the Beehive home, the nurses, cleaning staff, cooks, memory unit crew, and her friends, the residence of the home, the Good Shepherd nurses, Tina and Shyann, and Dr. Shurtliff, for their friendship, love and care of Eloise. Thanks to all of 2nd Ward in Roosevelt that she was such a part of for so many years and a thank you to the Relief Society for helping with the funeral. Funeral services will be held at the Hullinger Mortuary on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at 12:00 p.m., with a viewing from 11:00 - 11:45 a.m.
Burial will be in the Dry Fork Cemetery.

Robert Chuck “Chuckie” Evans, age 55, of Roosevelt, passed away October 12, 2023, at his home. Chuckie’s journey began April 29, 1968, in Murray, Utah, as the cherished son to Robert M and Barbara Ann Larsen Evans, along with his beloved sister, Angie. When he was three, he began school for special needs children at Primary Children’s Hospital. He attended Bingham High School until he graduated at age 21. One of the defining chapters of Chuckie's life was his service mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the Jordan River Temple. His commitment to serving others and his faith shone brightly during this time. He lived his younger years in Riverton and worked at Deseret Industries, until 1995, when Chuckie and his parents moved to a farm in Cedarview to be closer to his sister and her family. He spent the last five years living in Vernal at a group home- which he called “college”- with his Ponderosa crew. But visited home often for sleep overs and Holidays.
Chuckie was a big tease, the biggest flirt, and had many
“girlfriends.” His absolute favorite holiday was Halloween and he planned
what costume he would wear a year in advance-- and asked what everyone else was
going to wear all year long. In his younger days he won many gold medals
at the Special Olympics in Track & Field and Bocce, and was a good bowler.
His favorite things were Pepsi, Pecan Sandies, singing to the soundtrack
from Grease, dancing to Cindy Lauper, Christmas lights and knowing everything
about the Brady Bunch – feeding the cows and working were not on that
list!
Family meant the world to Chuckie, and he
cherished his special bond with his nieces and nephews. His love for them was
immeasurable. His passing has left a deep void, and he will be greatly missed
by all who knew him.
Chuckie is survived by his mother, Barbara Evans, Roosevelt;
sister, Angie (Rocky) Wills, Roosevelt; nieces and nephews, Colton (Rachel)
Wills, Chett Wills, Chellie (Shane) Lamb, and seven great-nieces &-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bob Evans.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at
11:00 a.m. at the Roosevelt 2nd Ward Chapel (250 W 200 N) with a viewing before
at 10-10:45 a.m.
There will be a viewing/Chuckie’s Halloween Celebration on
Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the Hullinger Mortuary. Feel free to wear your
Halloween best!
Burial will be in the Cedarview Cemetery.

Larry S. Ross, age 85, passed away peacefully at his home February 4, 2023. Not the end, but the next step for him in Heavenly Father’s Plan.
Larry was born December 4, 1937 in Arcadia, Utah to Marion and Gladys Ross. He was the fifth of seven children. He married Connie Rae Stevens on June 27, 1957 in the Salk Lake City, Utah Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Temple.
Larry was a father of eight children: Steven, Greg, Michele, Mike, Richard, Troy, Ryan, and Jared.
A patriot, Larry loved America and its liberties and virtues. A stirring rendition of the National Anthem always moved him. He also loved a thunderous jet flying just overhead, a stunning vista, an athletic play in sports, a smile from Connie, and most of all, watching his family grow and experience joy and happiness in the gospel of Jesus Christ.
As a growing child on the farm, Larry was asked to work hard and soon was doing a man’s day’s work by the time he was a teenager. This work ethic spilled over to his children where working hard became the norm.
He attended school at Myton Elementary, Roosevelt Junior High School, Union High School (student body president and captain of the football and basketball teams), and a brief stint at Utah State University.
Soon after high school, Larry married his high school sweetheart, Connie and they settled down in Pleasant Valley, Utah to begin a farm and family of their own. Other jobs such as truck driver, ditch rider, real estate agent, and business owner also helped finance a prosperous living and the raising of eight children.
A leader among men, Larry served in many leadership positions in the LDS church—bishop, stake president, and stake patriarch, just to name a few. He also served as a missionary in 2007-08 with his wife, Connie, in the Tennessee, Nashville Mission.
Public service was also a high priority and Larry accepted positions of sitting on several local boards including the board of the Uintah Basin Telephone Association and the Utah Water Conservancy District. He was elected a Duchesne County Commissioner for a time period of seventeen total years.
Larry is survived by spouse, Connie Rae, and eight children: Steven (Jeanna) Ross, Greg (Lisa) Ross, Michele (Rick) Schroedter, Mike (Cachelle) Ross, Richard (Kathy) Ross, Troy (Shauna) Ross, Ryan (Brenda) Ross, and Jared (Kadee) Ross; thirty-eight grandchildren and twenty-nine great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Leon Ross and Lanny Ross, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Alan Dale Ross, parents, brother Loryn Ross, sisters, Orlene White and Shirley Ernest and grandson, Garrett Schroedter.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2023 at 11:00 am at the Roosevelt 2nd Ward Chapel. Friends and family are invited to attend viewings on Friday evening at the Hullinger Mortuary from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. and Saturday at the church from 10:00-10:45 am,
Burial in the Roosevelt Memorial Park.

Connie Ross
Connie Rae (Stevens) Ross passed away peacefully at her home February 26, 2023. Free from the physical and mental ailments of this earth, she joins her loving husband, Larry. Together now, they are busy pursuing their next step in Heavenly Father’s eternal plan.
Born March 21, 1938 in Roosevelt, Utah to Orson and Millie Stevens, Connie was the second of four children. She married Larry S. Ross on June 27, 1957 in the Salt Lake City, Utah Temple, of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Connie was the mother of
eight children. Although small and petite physically, her heart and love for
her family, friends, and her Savior, Jesus Christ, was broad and unending.
While Larry worked to provide, Connie was the mainstay in the rearing of eight
children. Never a pushover, she held her own while teaching her children right
from wrong. She was skilled at meeting the needs of each child, making each
feel special and loved.
Sweethearts from high
school, Connie married Larry a year after both graduated in 1956 from Union
High School. They settled down in Pleasant Valley, Utah to begin a family of
their own. Along with being a mother and housewife, Connie held several
part-time jobs along the way including financial secretary for Johnson Water
Association, secretary for Ross Bros. Feed and Seed, and was also a postal
worker at the Myton, Utah Post Office. She later worked as a volunteer with her
many friends at the Pink Shop located in the Uintah Basin Medical Center.
A fierce disciple of Jesus
Christ, Connie accepted many LDS church positions helping and loving others and
displaying Christlike service. She also served as a missionary in 2007-08 with
her husband, Larry, in the Tennessee, Nashville Mission.
Her best friend and
sister, Janet, was a great support to Connie. Janet and Connie married
brothers, Leon and Larry Ross, respectively. The two families were not only
close blood relations but loved each other growing up. Connie would attend
Education Week at BYU with Janet year after year.
Connie is survived by her
eight children: Steven (Jeanna) Ross, Greg (Lisa) Ross, Michele (Rick)
Schroedter, Mike (Cachelle) Ross, Richard (Kathy) Ross, Troy (Shauna) Ross,
Ryan (Brenda) Ross, and Jared (Kadee) Ross; thirty-eight grandchildren and
twenty-nine great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Janet
(Leon) Ross, brothers, David (Coleen) Stevens, Chris (Linda) Stevens, and many
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death
by her spouse, Larry, parents, and grandson, Garret Schroedter.
Funeral services will be
held in Roosevelt, Utah, at 10:00 am at the Roosevelt 2nd & 11th Ward Church
located at 200 North 300 West on Saturday, March 4, 2023. Friends and family
are invited to attend the viewing on the same day from 9:00-9:45 am, as well as
the viewing scheduled for Friday evening, March 3, 2023, from 6:00-7:00 pm at
the same location.
